Build a deck with ground screws

To build a wooden deck using ground screws does not differ appreciably to building on a foundation of concrete. The main difference is that the wooden framework is built on a number of ground screws set up to 1 meter deep into the ground.

Ground screw advantages

The advantages of using ground screws is that there is no excavation work and so you do not need to turn the garden upside down as you would when digging by hand or with a small excavator. The installation of ground screws is fast and you put the screws exactly where they are needed for the wooden framework and at exactly the height you want. Before the ground screws are mounted, holes are pre-drilled to ensure a safe and accurate installation. Any rocks up to about 30 cm are broken up, while smaller stones move. After the screws are installed, work can begin immediately.

Different screws for different soil conditions and jobs

We have four different basic models of screws. To build a deck we primarily use beam-screws or possibly post-screws if you want to insert an upright post to raise areas of the deck to a higher level. Both the beam and post screws are available in different lengths and dimensions depending on the soil type and load required.

When the conditions are not suitable for ground screws on a deck or patio

In most cases a ground screw is an effective and stable method for securing various types of constructions. But there are of course times when a ground screw is not suitable. This applies if there is solid rock where you have to build. In which case, it is usual to drill holes in the rock and anchor with a steel tie. Or, if you are building partly over solid rock, we can help you put the screws into ground where there is no solid rock and use an anchor or tie where there is rock.

Another example of when the a ground screw is not suitable is if the ground is soft and unstable down to a level of 50 cm or deeper. Then you need the ground compacted before a good and stable mounting can be performed. EXTREMELY rocky ground can be a problem, but in most cases we can mount the ground screw even in rocky soil as we pre-drill all screws which then splits any rocks up to about 30 cm in diameter.

Other examples of building with ground screws

When it comes to construction in and around a garden, there are many other uses, for example:

  • • Building fences with ground screws
  • • Building a garden shed with ground screws
  • • Building larger garden buildings (offices, summerhouses, etc) with ground screws

Other places where ground screws are effective, for example, are the installation of bicycle racks, parking bays, signs, garbage bins, walkways, play equipment etc.

POST Screws for fixing posts and fences, carports, etc. The screw head is available in widths of 70 and 95 mm. POST Screws are available in lengths of 935 mm and 1200 mm.

BEAM Screws for mounting horizontal, joists for example as a foundation for a garden building. The screw head has a mounting width of 95 mm. The screws are available in lengths of 865 mm, 1000 mm and 1200 mm.
